Mission Statement
Acadia Hospital Education Program, sponsored by the Bangor School Department in cooperation with Southern Penobscot Regional Program for Children with Exceptionalities, is a regional, public school program located at Acadia Hospital. Authorization for school enrollment is confirmed in writing through the distribution of service agreements.
Goals of the Educational Program
The primary goal of the program is to provide special and regular education during a child's hospitalization. Teachers collaborate with clinical staff to develop behavior management programs that will help the students meet their instructional goals.
Program Location
Instructional delivery in the Acadia Hospital Education Program is via small group and individualized instruction as appropriate, and includes students within the classroom environments. Instructional staff employed in the program possess appropriate Maine special education certification. Educational program staff work closely with hospital clinical staff to assure the most effective provision of instructional services. Continuous coordination with local districts is designed to ease the students' return to local programming following hospitalization.
The program is located within Acadia Hospital and includes an administrator, two full-time teachers and a full-time secretary.
